What to Expect on the Water

The Willy Predator sled is built for Oregon's coastal conditions, giving us the stability and room we need for a productive day of crabbing. We launch early to make the most of our 5 hours, heading straight to the zones where Dungeness crab congregate during peak season. The beauty of crabbing is that it's accessible to everyone – you don't need any prior experience or special skills to have success. I'll walk you through every step, from baiting the pots to reading the water conditions that make certain spots more productive than others. The Oregon Coast offers some of the most consistent crabbing on the West Coast, and during our prime October-December window, limits are common. Between pulls, you'll get to take in the rugged coastline and maybe spot some marine wildlife that calls these waters home.

Crabbing Techniques & Gear

We use commercial-grade crab pots loaded with the freshest bait – typically chicken necks, fish carcasses, or razor clams depending on what's running best that week. The technique is straightforward but there's definitely an art to it. Water depth, bottom composition, and tidal movement all play into where we set our gear. I'll show you how to properly bait a pot, the importance of soak time, and how to identify the legal keepers versus the ones that go back. Oregon regulations are pretty specific – we're looking for male Dungeness crab measuring at least 53⁄4 inches across the shell. Female crabs always go back to keep the population healthy. The Willy Predator carries multiple pots so we can work several spots throughout the trip, maximizing our chances while giving you plenty of hands-on experience with different techniques and locations.

Dungeness crab are the stars of this show, and for good reason. These Oregon coast natives are some of the sweetest, meatiest crabs you'll find anywhere. Peak season runs October through December when they've molted into their hard shells and packed on weight for winter. A keeper male typically weighs 1.5 to 2.5 pounds, with the bigger ones pushing 3 pounds of pure deliciousness. What makes Dungeness crab so special is their incredibly sweet meat – way more delicate than East Coast blue crabs but with enough substance to make a real meal. They're also surprisingly intelligent creatures. You'll watch them investigate the bait, test the pot entrance, and sometimes even figure out escape routes if they're quick enough. During peak season, it's not unusual to pull pots with 4-6 legal males, plus plenty of smaller ones and females that get returned to the water. The best part?
